Peter & Brenda Gabe
Peter and Brenda commenced their involvement in Vintage cars in the 1960’s with the purchase of a 1927 Dodge 4 Sedan, Budd all steel body, 21 inch wheels, white faced instruments, 6V, separate starter/generator. One of the model Dodges where old and new stock were used without a specific model number. We registered and rallied this car for many many years. Peter became the local expert on Dodge 4s.

Brenda used the Dodge as an everyday car until she "updated" to the
1929 De Soto Sedan. The need for hydraulic brakes and a more suitable
gear change ratio was apparent for everyday use. Peter had given Brenda
a 1929 De Soto Coupe for her 21st birthday in 1970. It was restored in
1971 and they were so impressed with its performance it prompted the
sedan purchase and restoration in 1979. The Coupe is now owned by
DVHCC member Geoff Lewis.

Their collection of restored 1929 De Soto 6, all painted beige and brown,
was a Coupe (Biggs Body imported), a Sedan (Smith and Waddington-
South Australian body), a Tourer (was a sedan, replaced with tourer body)
and a 6 wire wheel Roadster (also commenced life as a sedan, too poor
to restore so replaced with roadster body to make up the set. They also
owned a 5 wire wheeled DA Dodge Business Roadster (boot not dickie
seat) at the same time. Deciding there were too many registrations, they
consolidated and just kept the sedan.

During the 1970s Peter also fully restored an Austin 7 Chummy which was sold to make room in the garage for a Singer Junior. In 1988 Peter restored a 1927 Hupmobile which now lives in Western Australia A modern diversion was the restoration of 1964 Datsun 240z - a fun car. When Brenda first developed MS in 1994 she had to give up driving the Sedan and finally use a “modern” car for everyday transport. They then acquired a 1955 Hillman Husky in 1994. Its interior had burnt out after an ignition fire. Brenda says “It starts up and runs like a dream - unstoppable.” Brenda’s MS progressed to such that she was unable to "climb” up the running board into the De Soto Sedan so it was reluctantly sold around the year 2000.

Peter and Brenda then purchased a 1955 Plymouth Cranbrook at the Bendigo Swap Meet as it is. It is just like sitting in a comfortable armchair and is brilliant for cruising on country roads. This car is now used to happily tow the trailer behind with Brenda’s wheelchair on board.
