	HISTORY OF THE SHAMROCK HOTEL

The Shamrock Hotel is an outstanding Bendigo landmark and is prominently situated at
principal intersection of this historic city.

The present Shamrock hotel is the third on the site. It was designed by architect Phillip
Kennedy, a native of Bendigo who received his training at the Bendigo School of Mines
under Nicolai and was articled to the notable architect Vahland.

The first was erected in 1854 and included local Cobb and Co. offices and a concert hall.
The second was larger in size and built in 1864. The present building dates from 1897.
The four storey brick structure has an elaborate mansard roof and decorative rendered
street facade which are encircled by a two storey verandah. The building was constructed by
	contractors Baxter and Boyne.

The Shamrock Hotel has been host to a number of important visitors including Prince George
(later George V), Donald Bradman and Dame Nellie Melba. In more recent times it has been
visited by the Prince of Wales and Princess Diana.

The building is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
